Shrek 2-Don’t Call Me Blandonio Blanderas
Few films actually pick up, literally where they left off. Which when films are as good as the Shrek films, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. With the Shrek series you know you are in for a uncomplicated, but good time, and sometimes that’s enough. That is not to say that the plot is highly original for it is essentially, the whole, “lets go spend some time with the in-laws” deal that has been done a thousand times. Shrek takes a trip to see Fiona’s parents and there is a subplot with the Fairy Godmother trying to get her son declared King, that is strictly a device to move the comedy along.
Unfortunately, we find ourselves with another royalty focused animated film, but what can you do, they are everywhere. Maybe if fathers will stop calling their daughters “Princess” we could take a step away from this funky royalty stuff that always ends up in animated features, but that is just a random suggestion. Layered with humor for both big and little kids, Shrek 2 is nearly as good as the first film and has lots of standout moments. Once again, the message of don’t judge a book by its cover and please don’t be a racist are of paramount importance, which is a good thing.
The acting performances are solid but not extraordinary. Antonio Banderas, who I normally refer to as Blandonio Blanderas, is actually really funny as Puss in Boots. I was shocked. Like most animated films these days anything approximating a meaty role is plugged up with some celebrity or another. Pretty easy work, you can roll into the recording studio completely out of shape, strung out of coke, despite the fact that you are recovered for good this time, and pick up some cash all the while having your ass kissed but bootlickers. Pretty good deal, I bet the directors and studio execs have to do some serious arm twisting, uh?
If you are looking for something bold, something new or original then look elsewhere. But its great CG and there are some really funny additions. Dreamworks continues to keep knocking the ball out of the park with the Shrek films. In fact, Shrek 2 raked in over $900 million worldwide. No new trails were blazed, but if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
